' Broadwell Warwickshire day in aid of WNAA'

On Sunday 23rd June we have an opportunity to prove our driving skills against the TSSC ( Triumph Six Sports Club )

An annual event takes place at Broadwell House, Nr Southam.which is in aid of two air ambulances.

This year we are trying to make it a bit more competetive and have been invited by the TSSC to participate.

The event consists of a gathering of classic cars, tea and coffee, bring a picnic, and a driving test in the afternoon.

The cost is £5 per driver/car with entrants only allowed if you have sent in the appropriate form plus the £5 for your entry pass.

David Croskell will make these available at our natter.

It would be good to have a good turnout and prove our driving skills.

David will follow up at the next natter to get an idea of numbers.

Recent Events

Thanks to Adrian Higman for last month’s amusing and very professional presentation on his European Tour.

The annual dinner went really well with 46 in attendance. Unfortunately four people were unable to attend due to illness. Many thanks to all who contributed to the raffle, which raised about £91. Due to people’s generosity in donating prizes, the raffle went on a bit too long, so we will try to shorten this next year.

For those who did not attend, our “Magic Midget” winners this year were:

-Leonie Tromans, for organising the Loire Valley tour last year

-James Darby, for winning the MGCC Peter Best Championship

-Terry Smith, for the epic restoration of his TC, now nearing completion

The Stoneleigh spares day was well attended by many of our members, most of us meeting up from time to time as we all walked round.

Forthcoming Events

Our annual Events list is now published on the club website.

10-12 May: Midland Centre Derbyshire weekend. This celebrates the 80th anniversary of the Centre.

9 May: North Leics MG “Charnwood Caper” From Anchor Inn at Hatham to Belton House.  £20.00 per car

21 April: Kilsby MG St George’s day run: To Calke Abbey. Depart from the George at 10.00pm latest. £2.00 per car.

Other News

Don’t forget we still have stocks of the excellent Meguiars Polishing products at bargain prices. Also good quality club clothing such as Tee, polo & sweat shirts can be bought at good prices. See Terry for both of these.

Via Kim Russell, we received a thank you from Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance for the £76.00 we donated in lieu of Christmas cards

Our sub committee to review ethanol in fuel had its second meeting on 26 February and continues to make good progress. After a final meeting on 9th April, we hope to issue our final report.

Terry and myself attended “Club Expo” at Gaydon on 2 March on behalf of the club. Some interesting presentations prompted several ideas for our future which we will be discussing with our committee.

The FBHVC has established that the classic car hobby is a £4.3 bn industry employing over 28,000 people.

Over 850,000 pre 1981 vehicles survive. Classis cars account for 0.24% of overall vehicle mileage.

The presentation being organised by Noel by Mr Terry Spall of MIRA will take place at our May Meeting.

From about 8.15pm for about 45 minutes.

The new 4.5m square “Coleman Event Shelter” has now arrived and awaits a nice day to try it out in my garden.

We may have found a cheaper supplier for the two sail banners we need and are finalising a revision to the artwork before getting a quote.

FOR SALE by Steve Tromans: 5 off 15” chrome wire wheels ex MGC. One brand new with new Toyo tyre, others 2yrs old with Michelin tyres. Also two Unipart 6v batteries.

21 April: Kilsby MG St George’s day run: To Calke Abbey. Details TBA.

Now fully booked. We hope to see Maggie tonight to get the table layout so that we can do a seating plan.

 Other News

Owners should be aware that there is a recall on 2008 and on MGTFs due to a suspension fault.

Our sub committee to review ethanol in fuel had its first meeting on 16 January which was very productive.

We meet again on 26 February to continue.

Terry and myself had intended to attend the MGCC Midland Centre AGM on 21 January, but did not do so due to the bad weather. However, we do hope to attend “Club Expo” at Gaydon on 2 March on behalf of the club.

Thanks to Noel, we have had the offer of a presentation by Mr Terry Small of MIRA.

Our committee will be discussing this tonight regarding timing etc.

We now have prices on two new Sail Banners and a 4.5m square “Coleman Event Shelter” for club use.

These will soon be ordered pending a check on finances tonight.

Other News

Our Auction of John Russell’s motoring effects raised a magnificent £368 for Macmillan Nurses. Thanks to all bidders for their generosity and to Tony Lake for doing an excellent job as our auctioneer

Peter and Lesley would like to thank Sue Walker for making their wonderful wedding cake and to everyone who generously donated towards it and the vouchers.

Don’t forget we still have stocks of the excellent Meguiars Polishing products at bargain prices. Also good quality club clothing such as Tee, polo & sweat shirts can be bought at good prices. See Terry for both of these.

We hope to have next years events list published soon

Congratulations to our Webmaster, Pete Moore, on his appointment a full time official of the MG Octagon Car Club.

I am not sure of his exact title, but he will be responsible for the Club Spares Division and will eventually be based in Hinkley.

As he will no longer be working nights, he now hopes to be able to attend clubnights.

Our sub committee to review ethanol in fuel will be meeting on 16 January to review & consolidate all published information on this potentially worrying topic, with a view to developing specific listings of what components & materials will need to be changed to become ethanol resistant, also sources of supply of these components.

It seems that the E petition we publicised recently had closed the day before we published the last newsletter. However with about 14000 signatories, it was successful and I understand the FBHVC was able to persuade our politicians to repel this latest EU intrusion on our liberty. Also it is now confirmed that from November 18 2012, MOT’s will no longer be required for vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1960. However it is possible that some insurers may require a voluntary one. Lets hope that this is not a sneaky precursor to limiting the use of these vehicles.

On behalf of the club, Terry and myself will be attending the MGCC Midland Centre AGM on 21 January,

and also “Club Expo” at Gaydon on 2 March.

November 2012 Newsletter

Apologies for the lack of a newsletter last month…PC problems then other things caused the first non-newsletter month  for many years.

Welcome to new members

Jan & Kim Perry from Newnham.   Jan has a TF and Kim a Westfield

Tonight….We have our Quarterly Raffle which is our main source of club funding

Recent Events

Not much to report although some of us went to the Restoration show at the NAC.

Dave Cotgrave got us a picture and mention in Enjoying MG this month with a short piece on our support of Hester McClintock’s 100th birthday celebration. There were also photos in the local Daventry and Rugby papers.

Forthcoming Events

Classic Car Show at the NEC on November 16-18.

A number of Kilsby members are going on the MGCC Midland Centre Welsh Rallye next Year.

There is still time to enter. Details on the MGCC Midland Centre website

Christmas Cards

Our ladies have sensibly suggested that we donate to charity rather than send cards this year.

They will collect the donations and there will be a card for signing at the December meeting.

A Kilsby MG cheque will then be sent to the charity. (I am not sure of the nominated charity at this time)

Other Matters

There is a dreadful Channel 5 programme currently running called Classic Car Rescue. The early October edition purported to “restore” an MGBGT. They bought an utter rotbox of a rubber bumper GT which clearly needed at minimum new floors, sills, inner wings, outer wings, windscreen pillars and no doubt much more. Other than welding up the Webasto aperture, no welding of any kind was shown or even mentioned in the programme. As I recall there was no mention of any brake rebuilding either. You saw the spraying and the conversion to chrome bumpers and that was about all. The car was then miraculously valued at £5000 after only 2 weeks work!!.

This was an utterly shabby and mendacious depiction of the realities of car restoration which would totally mislead the inexperienced regarding the true nature of the work required.

Thanks to some digging by Mike Hill and David Croskell, I understand that various MG forums have confirmed what was obvious to me when watching the programme, that they actually used another shell. Which shows up yet another lie, as they claimed in the programme that the engine had not been removed from the car.

If proof were ever needed that most reality TV programmes are an utter deception, this was it.

Petition

Try to find a minute to go online and sign the Epetetion to stop the EU banning all car modifications that deviate from specification which would be a major handicap for our hobby.

Our unelected Brussels masters will clearly not rest until they control every aspect of our lives.

Finally

Pete Bramble says that the Snetterton organisers put a picture of his car on the front of their race programme……..

Were they advertising a banger race Peter???

Recent Events

I cannot comment on Beachampton, Bletchley or other events as I did not attend, but a few words on Hollowell may be appropriate.  Conditions were horrific after heavy rain up to and including the Friday. Keith, David, Dave, Terry, Betty, Tony B, Noel and myself set up on Friday afternoon. Roadways were deep mud. Even Noel’s 4x4 needed a push. Having committed to the organisers to attend, we did. Due to predictable chaos & a long queue at the exhibitor’s entrance, most of us arrived early on the Saturday and got in without too much wait, but the mud was now even deeper and more glutinous, and we had to deploy Kilsby’s well developed trials driving techniques to reach our area. Well done to Bob Green, Keith, Terry, Richard Askew, Noel, plus myself, who made up our display.

Barry French and Bernard would have joined us if they had been able to get in past the mayhem at the entrance gate. Further rain during the day did not help, although our display looked good. To get out on the Saturday evening we had to go back up the hill and out the same entrance. The mud was now even worse, up to 9” deep in places, now with aimlessly wandering people and bogged down vehicles getting in the way. We went out in convoy to help each other if needed, driving as fast as possible with horns blaring to make sure we kept moving. It worked as we all made it. On Saturday night I rang round and advised those going on the Sunday not to come. Sunday was much the same, with the same people apart from Bob. Again our display looked good, and we may have gained a new member. Getting out on the Sunday was easier as we were able to use the bottom gate near the auction.

I am please to report that we won the second place award for car club displays (the well deserved winners being the Robin Hood Owners Club, some of whom had travelled long distances to attend). The bottle we won will be in tonight’s raffle. To set things in context, we should note that one other well known and larger car club who regularly attends only had 6 cars out of 19 on Saturday, and none on Sunday. Another large club failed to show at all on either day. So well done to all Kilsby members who displayed or helped to set up.  I am thinking of getting a special medal made up for them all. While recognising that Hollowell is primarily a Steam and Heavy Horse show, with the cars being a secondary attraction, I do think that the organisers need to help us to help them, perhaps by providing separate exhibitor car-only entrances and exits in bad weather to avoid the worst of the mudbath. It took me a couple of days to scrape and jetwash a bucketful of mud from under the car.

Forthcoming Events

19 Aug MGOCC Middleton Hall, also Sywell Air show with airside tickets available via Northants MGOC.

25/26 Aug Coventry Festival of Motoring at Stoneleigh Park.

2 Sept MGCC Midget Register Run

9 Sept Northants MGOC Barnsdale Gardens Run. £15.00 per car inc entry, 07825 643085 or NMGOC website.

15 Sept Weedon Fete from 1.00pm.

Olympic theme this year. Olympic year vehicles (1948-2012 at 4 year increments) particularly welcome.

23 Sept MGB 50 at Blenheim Palace.

30 Sept MGCC Midland Centre Dasset Trial. See Tony Lake if you want to marshal.

Welcome to new members

All being well, Ray Rowlings from Long Buckby will be along tonight. He has recently bought an MGB.

Recent Events

Various fetes have been attended, Woodford had about 7 Kilsby cars, although overall numbers were not high.

Princethorpe was also down in numbers from other years, but congratulations to Terry and Betty, who won the “Spirit of the Event” award in the form of a large cup. It has been suggested that this award was for the amount of spirits consumed on the day, but I am assured that this is not the case.

The Husbands Bosworth Festival was apparently a good event, although I was unable to attend as planned.

MG Live! At Silverstone had to contend with a massive downpour on Friday evening which left most areas of the grass infield unusable, causing inevitable disruption to the parking arrangements. Racing was on the full GP circuit, which in my view does no favours to club racing, as through no fault of the competitors it makes the cars look slow. It also gives poorer value to spectators as they see the cars less often compared to the shorter circuits. Also two of the races were too long at 50 minutes. Due to this, and the longer circuit, some of the racing was processional and not particularly interesting, although to be fair I did not see all of it due to volunteering duties. The two racers in our club, James and Peter, both did well and it would be interesting to hear their views on this.

Incidentally, Kilsby provided 5 of the many volunteers from the MGCC who help with this event…well done to them.

Forthcoming Events

7-8 July Hollowell Steam Rally. I believe we will have 11 or 12 cars on Saturday, but fewer on Sunday.

Several of our regulars will be absent as they are attending Classic Le Mans.

Setting up will be as usual from about 2.30 pm on the Friday. Lets hope for dry weather…..

12 July Beachampton BBQ & gathering. Our usual trip, departing from  A5 Weedon layby at 6.30pm.

28 July Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb, including MGB50 celebration & Midland Centre Chairmans picnic.

Some for the diary:

Barbara of NMGOC advises that they will be doing another Barnsdale Gardens run on 9 September. Only £15.00 per car inc. entrance fee, all to charity. This should be a good day out. Entry forms on their website.

MGCC MGB Register lecture “MGB: The Story” on Thurs 4th October at Abingdon, with a panel of MGB Luminaries including Paddy Hopkirk, Don Hayter, Stuart Turner, Peter Browning etc. £8.00pp. See www.mgb-register.org

I have details of the 2013 MGCC European Event of the Year in Denmark. Also see www.mgccdk40years.dk

Other Matters

I have used this and it is good stuff. Terry holds the stock, although he is on holiday in Norfolk and not here tonight.

I hear that the Northants MGOC Rose of the Shires run on 20 May was well up to standard this year.

The club tour of the Loire Valley was a great success and much enjoyed by the four couples who went. A big thanks to Leonie and Steve who masterminded and navigated. Also, well done to Tony Lake, who overcame severe clutch hydraulic problems, not to mention a small fire, but still completed the tour.

Recent Events

Our FBHVC St George’s day run on 22 April attracted about 12 cars leaving from Kilsby, with a few more meeting us at Husbands Bosworth. Given the recent poor weather, although it was on the cool side, we were lucky to have sunshine for most of the run, although it had deteriorated to rain and hail on reaching the venue. Many thanks to Mike Hill and Dave Cotgrave for planning a scenic and at times challenging 50 mile run.

Forthcoming Events

There is now an updated events list on the website

  • Other Matters

Our polishing materials order with Meguiars is progressing, Noel is setting up our trade account with them and we hope to have everything in place and the materials available for purchasing (and the polishing machine for hire) by our next meeting.

Terry and myself attended “Club Expo” at Gaydon last Sunday. This was a most useful forum for car clubs with many varied presentations & seminars. To summarise some key points:

  • The FBHVC is doing a fine job representing our interests at government level and protecting us from adverse legislation. Their recent survey indicated that classic car use represents only 0.24% of all UK mileage, a useful statistic to counter potential restrictions on usage.
  • Some smaller clubs have been struggling, but with sound & imaginative management can survive and prosper.
  • Health and Safety issues should not be a bar to any of our activities, providing that a full, relevant, signed and dated Risk Assessment is produced for any event.
  • There seems to be a consensus developing in the classic world that we should not despair too much about the lack of younger members. If you have a well run club, a website, message board/forum etc, they will find you when they are ready, perhaps in later life when they have more time/money etc.
  • Ethanol Fuel

This appears to be a developing situation with possibility of extended availability of E5.

Several of our members are investigating availability of E10 compatible materials etc, and we will have informal discussions tonight about setting up a working party of interested members to clarify exactly what we all need to do to our cars and where to source suitable parts and materials.

Tonight

We have Paul Squires with his electrical Q&A, to be held around the snooker table.

Recent Events

Our visit to Knight Engine Services at Nether Heyford was most enjoyable. Dave and his team put a lot of effort into giving us a comprehensive tour of his well equipped and tidy workshops, with much interesting discussion. Engines in process were amazingly varied, including Hudson straight eight, Austin 7, SS Jaguar, MGB, John Deere tractor & Jaguar racing engines, as well as the usual moderns.  We presented Dave with a Kilsby plaque and some beer for his team. Thanks to Keith Mason for arranging this visit (and Audrey for the cakes!).

Terry and myself attended the MGCC “Visions for the future” forum at Abingdon on Feb 4th.

This was open to all natter leaders from the Southern area and was well attended (there will be another forum for the north). The main focus was on ensuring that the club has well run & interesting natters, as these are the first and in some cases only contact that members have with the main Club, in support of which the club administrators are doing all they can to maximise communication up and down the chain between Kimber House, the Centres and The Natters (Incidentally, “Natters” will now be known as ”Pub Meets” to better reflect what they do).

It does appear however that some of the centres have work to do in respect of communications.

There was much lively and worthwhile discussion: we are pleased to report that it seems that the Kilsby Meet is one of the larger and better organised ones. In all we found that the MGCC is now in very keen, energetic and capable hands with good quality people, which promises well for the future.

Forthcoming Events

  • MG Spares Day at the NAC on 19 February
  • -     Annual Dinner on 21 February

-     Two popular local Runs: NMGOC Rose of the Shires on 20 May, Ratae Run on 17 June.

Other Matters

Following on from the Meguiars visit on December, your committee (particularly Noel), has been working to see if it will be worthwhile taking advantage of the Club Discount arrangement we have been offered for Meguiars products. Essentially we can get a 30% discount on shop prices for bulk buying. This seems a good deal, as the products are not too strongly priced in the first place. Typically, their premium quality polish would discount from about £26.00 to about £18.00p. We are proposing to buy in a range of their premium quality products and make them available to members at no mark up (beyond a rounding up for convenience). We need to buy in units of bulk packs of 4 or 6 per pack. We also propose to purchase their rotary polisher for £120.00 and hire it to members at modest cost, plus returnable deposit. All those who witnessed these products in use were impressed by them, and we feel they offer distinct advantages over some other competing brands. Our initial order needs to be £300.00 which we would achieve with the polisher…subsequent orders have no minimum limit. This proposal is basically cost neutral for the club & we should recoup our outlay fairly quickly if people avail themselves of the products.

I will discuss this topic in open forum tonight with a view to proceeding with the first purchase.

Wedding Bells

Pete Bramble has asked me to mention that he and Lesley will be getting married in December this year.

Congratulations from us all.

JOHN RUSSELL

John died on August 22nd. He and Kim joined Kilsby MG in March 2006, having recently bought their Midget.

He was already unwell when they joined us, but he never let that interfere with his many activities, and he and Kim were active supporters of the club. Their transport services for Hollowell in the famous little red van were particularly appreciated. John attended his last meeting on July 5th.

His unfailing cheerfulness and good humour were an example to us all, and he will be long remembered.

Many of our members were at the well attended and moving service in Norton, along with Air Traffic and boating colleagues.

Our thoughts are with Kim and Jo.

In lieu of flowers, we are making a donation to cancer research.

There will be a collection tonight for this.

The Tony Southgate Talk on April 13th went very well. We had a (literally) packed house of members and guests. Tony gave a very comprehensive and most interesting presentation which went on rather later than planned, so apologies to those who got home a bit late. A substantial sum was raised for the Peter Bramble race fund.

Many thanks to Tony and all those who sold tickets and helped out.

Our FBHVC Drive it Day  on April 17th was well supported with about 20 cars either on the run or arriving at Husbands Bosworth. We were blessed with excellent weather and the gathering at Hus Bos was an interesting collection of classics from mainly Kettering, Northampton and Leicester. Our thanks to Kettering Area Motor Club for allowing us to attend. Thanks also to Noel for planning the excellent route which many people commented on.

Northants MGOC Ataxia Run on 15 May (Flore to Upton House)

Many Kilsby people will be doing this run. I believe you may still just get an entry if you contact Barbara Trafford in the next few days (See Terry or Rick for details)

Cummins Fete on 18 May

Dave Cotgrave advises there is some doubt about this occurring. He is to advise soon.

Stony Stratford Classic Car Festival June 5…this could be a good event. See ssccf.co.uk

Other Matters

This is something I have been meaning to write about for some time, and thank Noel for the reminder.

You may be aware that forthcoming EC rulings will allow up to 10% ethanol in petrol.

This could be disastrous for the old car movement. Amongst other things, ethanol dissolves carburetors, seals and gaskets. It also attracts water which will rot out steel fuel tanks.

When bio fuel was introduced in S. America, carburetors were lasting about 12 months…

Noel has kindly passed on a draft letter to the Secretary of State for Transport which comprehensively sets out the concerns of the classic movement. Two copies are being circulated tonight. I understand that the FBHVC will be conducting a survey of classic owners very soon. Please do everything you can to raise your concerns over this. It is a very serious issue that could force older cars off the road in practical terms. The FBHVC will be fighting hard over this and deserve all our support. I have had some personal experience of bio fuels from my time in the diesel engine industry. Unless the engine and all fuel system components have been specified and tested to resist, they are very dangerous to older engines. Many manufacturers prohibit their use, and for good reason. Most modern cars, with fuel injected engines and plastic fuel tanks, will probably be OK. Since most of our spineless and useless politicians probably cannot tell a carburettor from a cauliflower, even with the aid of a 40 page EU manual, and in any case are hopelessly in thrall to our unelected masters in Brussels and to the Green movement, this is going to be a hard battle, but it is one we need to fight very hard. Quite apart from anything else, how much is your car going to be worth as a static exhibit in a market which will be saturated with unusable classics?? It may be possible to rebuild most of the fuel system with resistant materials, but what price new (remanufactured/retooled) carburetors, or aftermarket fuel injection conversions??.

At the very least, it will be necessary to drain down and flush the fuel system after every use…………

Recent Events

Our annual dinner held here at The George on February 22 went very well with an excellent meal in pleasant surroundings. The awards this year were reduced to our three “Magic Midget” awards and they went to:

-James Darby, for his third place in standard class of the MGCC Peter Best championship

-Steve Tromans, for facilitating the use of Willoughby CC pavilion for our Mike Costin evening

-Dave Cotgrave, for organising the club weekend at Buxton last year

Terry and myself would like to thank you all for the splendid and unexpected gifts we were given for our leadership of the club.

The MG spares day at Stoneleigh was well attended.…Terry and me counted that we met with about 40 members and friends as we went round the show. There were also 3 Kilsby cars earning their living in the hall…mine, Noel’s and Tony’s.

2011 Events List

Our 2011 events list is now on the website. I have a few copies here tonight.

MGCC T Register Rebuild Seminar:

Sun 5 Mar. Bicester. See Terry

MGCC Midland Centre Spring Trial and Spring Sprint.

The trial is on March 27 at Ledbury, the sprint on April 3rd at Curborough.

We have been asked if we can provide volunteers for marshalling these events.

Please consider going for this. Grass roots motorsport events such as this are getting rarer. The Centre is to be commended for organising them, but only by supporting them with volunteers can we ensure their survival,

especially as Kilsby is now one of the largest natters in the Midlands area.

It is good fun and a pleasant if tiring day out. We usually have lifts available for anyone not wanting to drive.

Please see Tony or Rick

Kilsby FBHVC Drive it Day Run on 17th April

Depart from the George at 10.00 am via route TBA to Husbands Bosworth airfield where other classics from Kettering Area Motor Club will be congregating

Stop Press!!! Talk on 13th April.

We are close to finalising our talk with a well known F1 & Endurance car designer.

This is to be held at Willoughby CC. As usual, tickets will be limited. We expect a high demand, and in general terms intend to give first refusal to most of those who attended our Mike Costin evening last year. Details to follow on the website when these people have been approached. Ticket price will be £8.50 to include a buffet. All proceeds will go to the Peter Bramble Racing Fund. With the recession affecting his work, withdrawal of sponsors, and cost of diesel, Peter is finding it hard to compete this year, and as a valued member of our club we would like to assist him.

We expect tickets to be available by mid March.
