October 2016 Newsletter

Tonight

We have one of our irregular, but nominally quarterly, raffles. Some items have already been kindly donated, but more would be welcome on the night.

Wecome to new Members.

Jamie Beswick, form Daventry, with an MGBGT

Bob Williams, from Silverstone, with an MGB Roadster

Richard Furnell, from Guilsborough, with an MG Midget

John & Jeanette Griffiths, from Rugby, with an MG Midget

Recent events:

I went to two of these. Sywell Pistons & Props on 24/25 September was a nice event, with windy but fine weather on the Saturday and a short heavy shower on the Sunday. Very good organisation, with no queuing on entry or exit.

The MGCC Dasset trial on Sunday 25 September was ably run by Tony Lake and the Midland Centre team. There was a good entry, fine weather and everyone had a good day with a lot of clean scores on some of the hills. Winner was a Hillman Imp.

Terry reports that the recent “Totally T Type” weekend in the Forest of Dean went well with several of our members in attendance.

Future Events

Sunday 23 October: Restoration show at the NAC Stoneleigh

Club Organisation I have now met with Steve and handed over all documentation relating to the Secretarial position, including the Members Book. Consequently I am temporarily without telephone numbers for most people, but will resolve this with Steve before long.  This will probably be my last newsletter, so we can all look forward to something from Steve next month. Should you not receive next month’s newsletter, it may be that something has gone wrong in the transfer of Emails between myself and Steve, so let him or me know if you do not get one. We are also in process of updating the website to reflect the changes and make various other updates.

Other Matters Many thanks to all who so generously supported my “Ride & Stride” cycle ride on 10 September to raise money for the upkeep of our historic churches. It was a determinedly wet day but I got round 17 churches in the Deanery of Daventry. I managed to reach Kilsby to the north, Preston Capes to the south, & Hellidon to the west, I got to Weedon in the east, but had to miss out Bugbrooke and others further to the east as I was running out of time. I was out for about 5 hours and over 40 miles, and raised a splendid £155. Thanks again.

Recent events:

There were numerous events, but I can only have report on one of them.

The Dunchurch Tanks, Trucks & Firepower Show on 27/28/29 August went well for us with 9 cars on the Saturday but only 5 on the Sunday for various reasons. Weather on Sunday was fine. On Saturday all was dry until about 2.00pm when we were hit with torrential and sustained rain in biblical quantity. Our event shelter proved its worth and the last of us left at about 4.00pm. Fortunately the site drains well and our exit was not unduly muddy, nor was the rest of the weekend affected.

Future Events We will be attending Sywell Pistons & Props on 24/25 September. Tony Lake advises that we are now fully booked on both days. To those attending, a reminder arrive at the adjacent Horseshoe pub at where Tony will hand out the entry wristbands & relieve you of your £5.00 Please note that we will be leaving the Horseshoe at 0900 LATEST & will not be waiting for stragglers. Thanks to Tony for arranging our entry.

VSCC Mallory is also on 24 September.

Kop Hill hillclimb is coming up but I do not have the date to hand.

The MGCC Dasset trial is on Sunday 25 September. I am sure anyone wanting to marshal will be made welcome.

Or just come and spectate at this marvellous example of grass roots motorsport. Once again Tony Lake is handling entries.

Club Organisation

I am very pleased to announce that Steve Tromans has generously offered to become our club secretary following my intention to stand down. Up to now we have never had formal titles, and I had in effect been carrying out the role of chairman, secretary and MGCC representative. Steve will now take over as secretary, assuming responsibility for the newsletter & some external communications. Several people have been kind enough to say that I should continue as Chairman and I will be pleased to do this, essentially remaining the external face of the club & the chairing of our committee meetings.  It will also allow me more time for the important & pleasant task of generally talking with the membership on clubnights, with particular emphasis on newer members. I will also continue as MGCC representative. The titles of Secretary and Chairman will now be formally adopted. All other committee roles remain unchanged. Steve and myself are to meet soon to start the handover. For those who do not know Steve, he is a long standing MG owner, now with an MGC GT, and having (to my knowledge) owned an MGA and an MGB V8. Ably supported by Leonie, they have between them organised some excellent continental trips for us in recent years. Steve is also area president of the exclusive Blue Knights motorcycle club, owning  several motorcycles, and has recently completed the very high quality restoration of a classic Triumph.

Other Matters

On Saturday 10 September I will be supporting the annual “Ride & Stride” event to raise money for the upkeep of our historic churches. I hope to cycle round as many of the 31 churches in the Deanery of Daventry as I can. These extend from Kilsby to the north, Preston Capes to the south, Harpole to the east & Hellidon to the west. Some modest sponsorship would be welcome, and I will bring a sponsor form along to clubnight.

Club Merchandise:

See Terry for all items. Club clothing available to order. Meguiars Polishing Products available ex stock, including polishing machine available for hire. We have recently stocked up on the more popular items.

We also have some Wire Wheel balancing adaptors for hire.

Recent events:

Hollowell Steam Rally on 3-4 July went very well. We had about 10 cars each day and the weather was kind, especially Sunday.

David Storer’s annual Beachampton BBQ & P.O.O. on 14 July was a splendid evening. We had a convoy of about 8 cars and others went direct. I think that it was their best event yet, with a really good gathering of cars and a good BBQ. Kilsby picked up several awards: Steve & Leonie, Jan & Kim, and Adrian & Dave Knight. Well done to them.

I sent David a thank you note on behalf of Kilsby.

Tonight

Just a normal clubnight (can we hope for a dry one this time?)

Our Raffle last month raise about £115 for club funds. Many thanks to all.

Recent events:

Our members who attended the MGCC International at Le Touquet report a good event and a successful trip.

No report on the  Woodford Halse Country Fair, but I hear that the Husbands Bosworth Festival & Classic Car Show went well if a little wet. I did attend the Princethorpe School Transport Festival and confirm that it was the usual pleasant afternoon, although we had very few members there this year.

By the time of our meeting, Hollowell will be behind us. I write this on Friday morning and will be going over this afternoon with Terry, Keith, Dennis and others to set up. If anyone not already entered now wants to go, contact Ros Snelson on 01327 876323 as she and John are unable to attend and have an entry pass for the 2 days.

Future Events

Tonight

We have our long awaited Raffle in aid of club funds. Many thanks to all those people who have already generously donated prizes.

Dave Cotgrave will be handing out mugs from the Alvis Fighting Vehicle Society to those who participated in last year’s Dunchurch event.

Recent events:

With a lot going on I can only report on the few events that I went to.

We had about 12 cars at Kilsby School Fete on May 22. Thanks to those who attended.  The event went well but I thought that it was a little subdued this year.

I write this on the Sunday of MG Live! Which I attended yesterday, along with the several other members I saw there. Well done also to Chris Cockram, Tony Brown, Keith Ingram, Steve Tromans & Tony Lake for helping out with the organisation. The event was pretty much as usual. The members Autojumble was good and I was able to buy a few bits that I needed, but I could do without the antics of Mike Brewer, Ant Anstead & Russ Swift in the main arena.

Future Events

A number of members will not be present at our meeting as they are braving the French industrial action and attending the MGCC International at Le Touquet this week. We wish Terry, Jim & Sue, Steve & Leone, Brian & Rosie, Tony & Silvia a good trip.

11  June Wodford Halse Country Fair from 1 pm.

25 June Husbands Bosworth Festival & Classic Car Show.

26 June Princethorpe School Transport Festival

Hollowell Steam Rally 2/3 July. I have requested our usual pitch from Mr Eaton but I do not exactly know who we have attending this year.

14 August: MG Day at Middleton Hall

August 27/28/29 is the Dunchurch Tanks, Trucks & Firepower Show. We have been invited back this year (unusual for us!!). Dave Cotgrave will be handling our entries for this, so let him know if you are interested.

The gathering at Beachampton must be coming up soon but at the moment I do not have any details.

Please note that there will be no Weedon Depot event this year.

Other Matters

Dave Cotgrave has had a letter from WNAA thanking us for our donation.

Someone has an MGF windbreaker & tonneau for sale at £40.00 each. Contact Barbara Trafford 07708 010054

The club now has two new banners: one from MG Octagon Club, which I have not seen but am told is very good, and a nice one from Meguiars which we cheekily asked for when we topped up on the products.

Tonight

Will be just a regular clubnight although I believe that we may have the Air Ambulance along to receive their cheque & give us a short presentation. I am unable to confirm this with Dave as he is in India.

Recent events:

Our FBHVC Drive-it-day run on Sunday April 24 went really well. We had a record 25 cars and the weather was kind in an otherwise bad period. A shorter run than usual, but none the worse for that. Our line-up of cars at Blooms created quite a lot of interest. Many thanks to Dave Cotgrave for his excellent organisation of the event.

Several people have commented how much they enjoyed the day.

VSCC Silverstone the day before was attended by several Kilsby members and was once again an excellent day.

Weather was again kind as long as you were dressed for the biting wind.

Future Events

Our JUNE clubnight will feature a raffle to bolster our slightly dwindling funds.

We have a number of prizes already but more would be appreciated.

4/5 June MG Live! At Silverstone

11  June Wodford Halse Country Fair from 1 pm.

25 June Husbands Bosworth Festival & Classic Car Show.

26 June Princethorpe School Transport Festival

Hollowell Steam Rally 2/3 July. I have some entry forms which must be in by 30 May.

Other Matters

Tony Lake has heard from the MGCC Midland Centre that they are desperately short of assistance for MG Live! Camping, which they organise every year. This could involve attendance at various times from Thursday pm through to Saturday pm. You would be required to do 2x 2hour stints.

A free weekend ticket and camping permit is available for helpers. Contact Lech Zakrzewski (the.zaks@virgin.net)

Or Tony Lake tonylake134@hotmail.co.uk 01604 589104

I still have two unclaimed MacMillan prizes from the George draw.

One is for Mike Everitt (who I believe is away). The other is for “Mike, MG Club”, so would all the remaining Mikes form an orderly queue on clubnight.

Mike Hill and myself are considering taking an autojumble stand at the Stoneleigh October Restoration Show.

See Mike or myself is you are interested in joining us & sharing the cost & manning.

An opportunity to sell all that stuff you are never going to use.

Club Merchandise: See Terry for all items. Club clothing available to order. Meguiars Polishing Products available ex stock, including polishing machine available for hire. We have recently stocked up on the more popular items.

Will be just a regular clubnight

Recent events:

The season is now starting to get underway but I do not have much to report on.

Five of us marshalled at MGCC Curborough yesterday. The event went well with over 40 entrants & good weather.

Future Events

Just to advise that at our MAY clubnight we have the Northants & Warwicks Air Ambulance coming to give us a short talk & to receive a £100.00 cheque from us, this being the proceeds of our Christmas card donations, our Dinner cash draw, with a small top up from club funds.

On the subject of club funds, we are OK but getting a little low, so we will hold a Raffle on our JUNE clubnight.

We have a number of prizes already but more would be appreciated.

10 April: MGCC MGB register Spring Run Abingdon or Hatton to Ragley Hall.      mgbregister.org

23 April VSCC Spring Start meeting at Silverstone. Excellent racing, great cars and only £10.00 entry I think.

30/31 April Donington Historic Festival.

1/2  May Abingdon Airshow

Our first event is our annual FBHVC Drive-it-day run on Sunday April 24. Arrive at the George by 10.00 am for a 10.30 start. This will be a short run to a local shopping opportunity venue, which also has a good café/restaurant.

Dave Cotgrave has kindly organised this run along with a reserved parking area at the venue.

Entry fee will be £2.00 per car, and all entrants will receive a free mug & pen courtesy of Paul Tainton & Southam Tyres.

Plenty of time, but Hollowell Steam Rally entry forms have been out for a while now & need to be returned by 30th May. The event is on 2/3 July. If you do not have a form but wish to join in our display on either the Saturday or the Sunday (or both), then see Rick who has some spares.  Pre entry is essential.

Other Matters

Yet another example of the appalling quality of classic car spare parts that are put out by most of the suppliers (who probably all get them from the same Chinese source). Getting my MGB ready for MOT I found that the brake light switch that I fitted only two years ago had failed. To my knowledge, there have also been issues with rotor arms, condensers, coils, brake calipers, brake hoses, fuel unions, bumpers, over riders, grilles, almost all rubber parts, wheel bearings & choke cables. Other people have reported issues with many other things. When are our suppliers going to wake up to the fact that this is annoying the customers, who may well give up classic ownership in consequence, or could well lead to serious accidents in view of the safety related aspect of some of the faulty components.

The suppliers parrot out the usual tripe about customers not willing to pay more, but this is just a poorly chosen smokescreen intended to cover the fact that they are unable or unwilling to carry out the necessary quality checks and/or bring pressure on the suppliers. I fear that it may take a fatality to bring them to any form of responsibility.

Tonight

Members will be aware that Noel’s funeral will have taken place earlier in the day.

Family flowers only were requested, with donations invited to Leicester Hospital Charities, via the Funeral Directors. Those who attend the funeral will no doubt contribute at the church, but for other members who wish to donate, we will be holding a collection tonight.

In a very kind gesture in celebration of Noel, his daughter Sarah has laid on a buffet for club members which will take place tonight.

Recent events:

Our annual dinner on Thursday 18 February seemed to go well, with a record attendance of 58.

Thanks again to Mike & Meryl for the considerable job of organising it all.

For those unable to attend, our Magic Midget winners this year were:

-Jim & Sue for their MGA Restoration

-Pete Newman for his MGBGT V8 restoration

-Steve Waddingham for his excellent AML talk

(Steve has offered to give us another talk to include recent developments.

One clubnight sometime mid-year we hope)

The MG/Triumph spares day at Stoneleigh on 21st Feb was attended by about half of the club if the number that I met was anything to go by. A good show I thought (but then I did manage to get most of what I went for).

Future Events

For those who have volunteered to marshal at the Spring Sprint at Curborough on Sunday April 3, transport sharing arrangements will be made by contacting people in the coming weeks.,.

Mike Hill and myself will be attending  Club Expo at Gaydon on March 19.

Other Matters

Most members will now be aware that I have decided to stand down as Chairman/Leader of Kilsby MG Club, to take effect by around October/November which is when we have our annual committee meeting.

The club does not have a procedure for selecting a replacement, so your committee will be discussing how this is to take place over the coming months. Members can be assured that whatever method is adopted, it will be a fair and transparent process, and could involve an election if there are several candidates.

Future Events

- A reminder that at the annual dinner on Thursday 18 February, (7.00 for 7.30) we will NOT be holding a Raffle this year, but will have a £1.00 per ticket cash draw, with 50% going to WNAA.

-We are invited to join the Arden Club on 14 February for their run to the renamed & revamped British Motor Museum at Gaydon. Start 0930am from the Golden Cross, or turn up at Gaydon. Special entry price £9.00pp.

More details on 01789 261815 which is probably Paul Dunster.

Other Matters

Good to report that as of about a week ago Noel Lahiff is responding well to treatment and much improved. He is still in Leicester General, but when his mobility has improved he will be released to a rehab unit in Market Harborough.

A good response to our request for marshals at the Spring Sprint at Curborough on Sunday April 3rd.

Adrian, Kim, Gail, myself, Richard Askew & possibly Richard Tomkins so far. We can sort out transport arrangements nearer the time. Simon Morris, the MGCC Chief Marshal, is appreciative of our proposed help.

I’m still working on the 2016 events list & hope to have it published shortly.

Over a year ago the committee agreed to pay a mileage allowance of 14p/mile to partially reimburse members travelling on club business ie reconnoitring runs etc. So far this has not been implemented but we now intend to do so.

A reminder that any short articles/photos for the website would be most welcome

Send to Pete Moore:  mail@kilsbymgclub.org.uk

Congratulations to Dave Knight whose MGC is featured on the MGCC Register MGC calendar for 2016.

We have made two reservations for Club Expo at Gaydon on March 19.

James & Gail Keogh, from Claybrooke Magna

Paul Tainton, from Rugby, with an MG3 (our first)

Paul is mechanic and helper to Pete Bramble’s racing equipe (he has our sympathy & understanding)

Recent events:

28 members attended our Christmas lunchtime gathering on Wednesday 30th December.  We all had a good chat & it made a pleasant way to end the old year.

Terry advises that Vintage Stony was very busy. To the extent that he had trouble parking the TD despite arriving at 10.30.

Future Events

-Still a few places available for the annual dinner on Thursday 18 February.  See Mike & Meryl.

-Autojumble at the Ricoh Arena on Sunday 17 Jan (Note: there may be a car parking charge).

-21 Feb: MG/Triumph spares day at Stoneleigh.

Other Matters

Noel Lahiff is back in hospital & rather poorly. All good wishes to him.

Our Christmas card collection for WNAA raised £34.85.

In 2015, the MGCC Midland centre had some trouble getting sufficient marshals for its annual Spring & Summer Sprints at Curborough. The Spring 2016 event is in Sunday April 3rd.  These are good events and it would be a shame to lose them. For 2016 we are hoping that Kilsby could provide some marshals (we have done this occasionally in the past). If we can get a car load or two it would ease the travelling. No experience is necessary. The cars run one at a time. Let me know if you are interested. Tony and myself will be attending the Midland Centre AGM on January 18 and it would be good to advise them of our support at the meeting.

The 2016 events list will be published shortly.

A reminder that any short articles/photos for the website would be most welcome

Send to Pete Moore:  mail@kilsbymgclub.org.uk

We hope to send a couple of representatives to Club Expo at Gaydon (usually held in February)

Paul Tainton has kindly donated a large box of promotional pens & mugs. We will be giving them to entrants at our Drive-it-Day run on April 24.

Club Merchandise: See Terry for all items. Club clothing available to order. Meguiars Polishing Products available ex stock, including polishing machine available for hire. We also have some Wire Wheel balancing adaptors.

Tonight

We will be collecting in lieu of Christmas cards for our nominated charity, WNAA.
There will be a collection box on the bar.  Speaking of the WNAA, we have decided that as the club is not in pressing need of funds, at our annual dinner this year we will hold a £2.00 per ticket cash draw with 50% back to the winners & 50% to WNAA. Dave Cotgrave has been in touch with them and it seems that after the dinner they could come out to one of our clubnights to receive our donations & give us a short talk on the WNAA.
Eliminating the raffle from the dinner will give more time for socialising as the raffle did tend to go on a bit.

Recent events

:     Nothing to report this month.

Future Events

The Kilsby Christmas lunchtime gathering this year is confirmed for Wednesday 30th December from 12 noon.
Meals can be ordered on the day.

Our annual dinner will be on Thursday 18 February. Price will be £19.90 for 2 courses or £22.90 for 3.
Mike & Meryl have menus but I do not have them to hand….maybe Mike will have them on clubnight.
Usual arrangements will apply with the early bookers in the dining room, and any late bookers having most likely in the bar.

Vintage Stony Stratford is on New Years day, from 10.30.
Autojumble at the Ricoh Arena on Sunday 17 Jan (Note: there may be a car parking charge)

Other Matters

Noel Lahiff has been out of hospital for about 3 weeks. He is on a daunting course of antibiotics, but is in good spirits.

Your committee met on November 24 to review 2015 & consider events for 2016.
The 2016 events list will be published shortly.

Some matters arising:

-Thanks to all members who supported our events in 2015.

-Website: Pete Moore needs members to submit material & photos to keep the website fresh & active.
-Short articles and photos of members cars ie history, restoration, stories, recent trips etc.
I might even do one on my MGA rebuild which is progressing albeit slowly. I need to keep it moving along as two separate chassis and a removed bodyshell take up a lot of garage space!!!.

-2016 Drive-it-Day will be to a large Garden Centre somewhere. Dave is kindly organising.

Club Merchandise: See Terry for all items. Club clothing available to order. Meguiars Polishing Products available ex stock, including polishing machine available for hire. We also have some Wire Wheel balancing adaptors.

Recent events

Several of us attended the Restoration show at Stoneleigh on October 25th.
Our little group was successful in obtaining most of the things that they wanted, although the show does seem to be getting smaller. On the credit side, I did not hear of any queuing issues this year.

Future Events

Just to advise that the Kilsby Christmas lunchtime gathering this year will be (subject to agreement with Maggie) on Wednesday 30th December. This seems to be one of the few practical dates due to the way the holidays fall this year.

Other Matters

Noel Lahiff continues to be unwell and is receiving treatment in Leicester General. He is in good spirits and has received several Kilsby visitors. All members will want to send their good wishes. Further to my comments last month, I have taken over the treasurer’s role on a temporary basis, but it now looks as if we will be needing a volunteer to take over from Noel on a more permanent basis. It is not especially onerous as we do not have a large number of transactions in any given month, but the job does require a methodical approach to maintaining out cash and bank balances. At present we have about £450.00 cash and bank. Please talk to me or Terry if you are interested in taking on this committee position.

Members will be pleased to hear that Terry is making a good recovery from his recent back surgery and is now driving again.

Your committee will shortly be holding our annual committee meeting to review last year’s activities, consider those for next year, and to review the general direction that the club should be taking. All thought and ideas to either me, Terry, Mike, Tony, Dennis, David or Shelagh.
One item that we will need to decide upon is a venue for our 2016 Drive-it-Day run. Ideally a place of interest that can be reached by a run of no more than about 40 miles from Kilsby. Suggestions welcome.

Recent events

The Dunchurch Tanks, Trucks & Firepower show was a new event for us and something a bit different. All who attended on both days (we had 8 cars each day) enjoyed the event which was very well organised. We were the only cars there and consequently attracted quite a bit of interest as an alternative to the numerous military vehicles.
(my favourite was the Russian T55 tank). Weather was great on Saturday but a bit wet on the Sunday.

Sywell Pistons & Props on 26 & 27 September was blessed with wonderful weather and had a good variety of cars, bikes, & trade stands keep you occupied. Some idiot forgot to bring the top cover to our event shelter but in my defence I had put it away to dry out after Dunchurch & then forgot to put it back in the main bag. The aircraft displays were not numerous but of very high quality. Pitts Specials, BBMF and a 7 aircraft WW1 replica dogfight on the Saturday. Whether the Shoreham disaster had any bearing on the displays I do not know.
Many thanks to Tony Lake for organising this for us.

That man Lake as at it again on Sunday 27 Sept as the Event Secretary for the MGCC Midland Centre Burton Dasset Production Car Trial which had a good entry and was much enjoyed by all. The winner (Hillman Imp) was generous in his compliments to the organising team & marshals. It was good to see several Kilsby members marshalling or spectating. Once again the weather was glorious.

Future Events

October 25: Restoration show at Stoneleigh.

Other Matters
Our treasurer, Noel Lahiff, has been unwell lately due to this and other commitments and has asked to stand down for the time being as our treasurer. All good wishes to Noel for a speedy recovery. Our books are in good order I am most grateful to Noel for the work he has done. Short term, I will take over as treasurer until Noel resumes or decides to stand down.

Your committee is becoming concerned at the increasing number of members who say that they will attend events and then fail to show up. This creates difficulties as: a) It us discourteous to our organisers who will have worked hard to plan & organise our display. b) When numbers are limited, it may deprive someone else of an opportunity.
c) It creates potential problems for Kilsby with the event promoters if we have less than the promised number of cars on display. d) It creates difficulties on the day in knowing whether to leave display space for the missing cars which may or may not show up. We all know that old cars can be temperamental and must allow for this, but if you have indicated that you will attend, please inform our organiser in good time if you are unable to do so.

Recent events
Hollowell Steam Rally on 4/5 July went very well for us as we won the award for best car club display.
We had a very good pitch this year and 11 or 12 cars each day. Weather was splendid apart from a short downpour at 3pm on the Sunday. Thanks to all who attend and make this a successful event for us.

Our visit to the Shoulder of Mutton in Little Horwood on 9th July was blessed by lovely evening weather. After the BBQ we wandered around looking at the largest ever number of cars I have seen at this event. Kilsby was well represented in the self judging, with Dave Knight, Tony Brown, Jim & Sue & Adrian all collecting awards.

We had a wonderful turnout for our 21st Anniversary BBQ at our last meeting, with 43 people for the BBQ and probably about 50 in attendance. Thanks to all for supporting this.

I see from this months Safety Fast! that Tony Lake has sneaked in a mention for us regarding Hollowell & the BBQ.

Future Events
Coming up on Sunday 9th August we have the Weedon Garrison Open Day. We can bring an unlimited number of cars to this event, so it would be nice to see a big turnout. Arrive by around 0930 am for a 10.00am public opening.
Drive in through the gates and we will be about halfway down the road backing up onto the canal.
This is a pleasant and quirky event with a predominantly military theme, WW1 replica hospital, the 44th East Regiment of Foot, Battle of Britain RAF group along with cars, trucks, fighting vehicles numerous other displays, a very good 50s Rock band (Johnny Red), I believe two other rock bands, a Ukelele orchestra, a Tea Dance, a car boot, some traders  and much more. The site dates back to 1804 and is also well worth a look.

Event closes at 5.00pm. Last year was marred by appallingly wet weather but was still enjoyable and there is plenty of inside activity if it does rain. Postcode is NN7 4PS.

Sunday 16 Aug: MGBGT 50th at Shelsley Walsh (mgb.register.org)
And also on the 16th the MG Day at Middleton Hall.

Tony Lake advises that we are fully booked up for Sywell Pistons & Props on 26 & 27 September.

Earls Barton Classic Meet  every 1st Weds. Whites Nurseries NN6 0EP
The Northampton Classic Meet at the Yeoman of England in Wooton, NN4 6LP on every second Monday.
Husbands Bosworth Meet lunchtime meet every 4th Sunday

Mallory Park has started to hold classic car evening meeting's on Monday nights the next is on the 24th August. The Lakeside Cafe in the paddock is open for food. Starts 6pm

Other Matters
I have written to MGCC with feedback on MG Live!, suggesting that they must do something to increase the number of traders at the event back to former numbers, as this is what many of our members attend for.

Tony & Eileen Leech from Monks Kirby, with a 1952 TD, an Alvis 12/50 & an Alvis 12/60 (lucky people)

Recent events

Perhaps Adrian will tell us how his run to MGs in the Park on June 7 went.

The Holland EEOYY was attended by Terry/Noel, Tony/Sylvia & Brian/Rosie.

Apparently a good event but very poor route directions for the runs.

Dave Cotgrave has asked me to thank those who braved the poor weather to support the Cummins Open Day, which I gather was quite successful.

MG Live! over the 20/21 weekend went well for me, and I found something to keep me occupied both days despite the poor weather on the Saturday which did not really disrupt things & led to some interesting racing.

Pete Bramble did well especially on the Sunday, but James Darby, although fast, had engine trouble on both days.

Nice to see Martin Price of the Midland Centre back after his recent hospitalisation  & competing in the Sprint.

However the event does need get more traders back as in earlier years (presumably by offering better terms), as this is what many go to the event for.

The Husbands Bosworth Festival last Saturday was apparently very good, and I can confirm that the Princethorpe College Classic Day which followed on the Sunday was also very pleasant.

Future Events

I write this on the Thursday evening prior to going to Hollowell with others to set up on Friday afternoon.

Can I take this opportunity to thank all those who help with the set-up and the mowing. Much appreciated.

We have about 10-12 cars each day & look forward to a good event. We have prepared some A3 plaques commemorating several anniversaries which occur this year: Kilsby MGs 21st, the MGF 20th, The MGBGT 50th, & the MGA 60th.

On Thursday 9th July we have our annual trip down to David Storer’s friendly AWC BBQ & P.O.O. which will be at the Shoulder of Mutton in Little Horwood. Next month they revert to their old haunt of the Bell at Beachampton.

Meet in the layby on the A5 between the Weedon lights & Clarke’s garage at 6.00pm for a 6.15 departure.

Tony Lake advises that we are fully booked up for Sywell Pistons & Props on 26 & 27 September.

Jacks Hill Café Meet 2nd Fridays from 6.00pm (New meet…thanks to Adrian for advising)

Earls Barton Classic Meet  every 1st Weds. Whites Nurseries NN6 0EP

The Northampton Classic Meet at the Yeoman of England in Wooton, NN4 6LP on every second Monday.

Reminder: Next Month we have one of our quarterly fundraisers (a Raffle this time round).

Other Matters

Thanks to Mike Everett, Noel now has received some advice regarding the fitting of his MGB front underwing shields.

I am now well into the long postponed re- rebuild of my MGA, so anyone wanting a laugh & a cuppa is welcome to call by and have a look.

I will be asking tonight to establish who has entered Hollowell this year.

Names required for attendance at Sywell Pistons & Props on 26 & 27 September.

Cost will be £5.00 per car this year. Please Advise Tony Lake ASAP so that he can pre-enter our group.

21st Anniversary Barbeque

We will be celebrating our 21st anniversary at our next meeting on July 7 with a barbeque run by the George.

This will be Ticket only at £10.00 per head. Tickets will be available from tonight and up to 14 June by contacting Rick or Terry. Local beef burgers, hand tied sausages, bread & salad.

If you do not want the BBQ you can still attend the meeting.

Other Matters

Noel would like to know if any members or colleagues have ever fitted the front underwing shields that are sold for the MGB. The ones he has do not fit very well (if at all!). Sadly this is all too typical of the appalling standard of aftermarket parts that are cynically marketed into the classic car world these days.

Wanted

MG Midget wanted by 17 year old enthusiast.

Ideally a basically sound but possibly scruffy car requiring cosmetic or minor mechanical work. Rubber bumper OK. Contact Rick.

Our FBHVC Drive it Day Run on Sunday 26 April was a nice little starter to the season for most of us. Dave Cotgrave organised a short run to the Husbands Bosworth Gliding Club, where a monthly Classic Car gathering was also being held. We had about 17 cars leaving Kilsby and about another 3 meeting us there. Although chilly to start with, the weather held and was quite sunny and warm later on. Thanks again to Dave for organising this.

Kilsby has now supported the D-I-D run every year since its inception.

There was a good turnout of different cars at the airfield, but the only other cars I saw en-route was a convoy of three Citroen 2CVs.

I attended the VSCC Spring Start meeting at Silverstone on 18 April. What a great event. Only £10 entry & £3 for a programme. Eleven races on the National circuit, close & interesting racing & fantastic cars.

Dare I say it, far better than the over-long laps at MG Live! using the GP circuit.

I am looking forward to the VSCC Mallory event on 22 August.

Future Events

Earls Barton Classic Meet Weds evening 6 May (& every 1st Weds). Whites Nurseries NN6 0EP

Kilsby Fete on 17 May at Kilsby School. Arrive for 12:30-1.00pm. Finish 4.30. NO DOGS PLEASE.

Our Silverstone visit on WEDNESDAY 20 MAY. We now have about 21 paid participants so the numbers are good. Allan and myself will be finalising details on clubnight, when instructions will be issued (and mailed to those not in attendance. (Basically arrive at the Racing Club Clubhouse (Outside of Woodcote) for a 10.00 am start)

Recent events

Our talk about Aston Martin Lagonda by Steve Waddingham was well supported, and Steve gave a very enjoyable

presentation.

He has now completed his J.O.G trip successfully and raised over £860.

Pete Bramble came 4th overall & 4th in class at Mallory on March 29.

A good result. I was going but it was wet & windy and he hadn’t paid me enough (actually I had to be elsewhere). Apparently he now has to wear a full face helmet which can only be a good thing for the paying public.

Future Events

Sunday 26 April. Our FBHVC Drive it Day Run this year will be to Husbands Bosworth Gliding Club, where a monthly Classic Car gathering is also being held. We have not discussed a depart time but assume that it will be not later than 10.00am from the George. There will be a small entry fee per car levied on the day.

Coffee and food is I believe available at the airfield café.

Lets hope that the weather is better than the last time we went there when we had driving sleet. Thanks to Dave Cotgrave for organising this.

Our Silverstone visit will be WEDNESDAY 20 MAY. More details to follow

As I set out by separate mail to all members, we really need payment and commitment on our April 7 club night, as Silverstone need paying in advance and we also need to know numbers.

As of Sunday 5th April, I have only had four responses from  over twenty who had earlier expressed interest, so I will be chasing this up on 7 April clubnight. Our minimum number is about 14.

The MGOCC AGM is on Sunday 12 April

18/19 April. VSCC Spring Start meeting at Silverstone. Always a good event.

On 18 April, Terry & Dennis will be supporting the 4th Classic Virgins event at Gaydon

Kilsby Fete this year has been confirmed for 17 May.

Arrive for 1.00pm. Finish 4.30. NO DOGS PLEASE

Hollowell Steam Rally on 4/5 July. Rick has some of the (essential) pre entry forms which must be in by 30th May

2015 Events List

The Northampton Classic car meet formerly at the Queen Eleanor is now at the Yeoman of England in Wooton.

Other Items

We have now confirmed that insurance cover for displays and fetes is in place. In summary:

a) Our member’s individual Classic Car insurance should cover for any incident relating to that vehicle.

b) Liability insurance carried by MGOC, MGCC and MGOCC (via the MGOC) will cover us for any non-vehicle related incident eg: gazebo blowing over & causing damage, member of public tripping over guy rope etc.

However there are two provisos:

1) The MGOC must be notified of event attendance 21 days in advance. Dave Cotgrave will handle this as required.

2) If a written request for display space is submitted (as I always do for Hollowell), it will be prudent for me (or anyone else acting in similar capacity) to state on the request that Kilsby MG Club is a local meeting for members of the MGCC, MGOC & MGOCC, and as such is covered by the Public Liability policies operated by those clubs.

It is also good practice to carry out a dated Risk Assessment for each event and have it visible on the day.

Recent events

Things have suddenly got busy.

Our dinner seemed to go well and was over all too quickly.

The Raffle raised about £99 less bouquet expenses.

Mike Hill, Tony Lake  & myself attended Gaydon Club Expo on behalf of Kilsby.

An excellent day that seemed to show that Kilsby is doing all the right things. We talked to a lot of people about various aspects of running the club that will be useful for the future.

The seminars were: Social Media for Clubs, & Club motorsport & related topics by the MSA.

The opening address was about car theft, & the closing address was on classic car values.

(Don’t sell that Ferrari GTO just yet…but anybody want to buy an MGBGT??).

It was good to meet so many club members old, new, past & present at the MG/Triumph spares day yesterday.

This is a good show now, although I understand that unless you got there early there was some delay getting in.

Future Events

-This Thursday we have our talk about Aston Martin Lagonda by Steve Waddingham.

£6.00 per person including a couple of sandwiches. All proceeds to Steve’s hospice charity.

At the George. Arrive at 7.00 for 7.30 start. Rumour has it that there could be a surprise element to the evening….

Pay on the night. We have about 30 attending so far, but more including friends would be welcome.

-Allan Bell has advised that the date for our Silverstone visit will be WEDNESDAY 20 MAY. More details to follow.

2015 Events List

Please note that the Northampton Classic car meet formerly at the Queen Eleanor is now at the Yeoman of England in Wooton. I think that the website version has been updated. Incidentally, Pete advises that due to circumstances beyond his control there have been some issues with the website that he is trying to resolve.

Other Items

Members who attend the Hollowell Steam Rally may have noted that there is a clause requiring all entrants to carry their own insurance and that Hollowell will not be held liable for any incidents. This relates to the Public Liability aspect of insurance. I am not going to go into all the ramifications & implications of this now, but early investigations by your committee suggest that:

a) Our member’s individual Classic Car insurance should cover for any incident relating to that vehicle.

b) Liability insurance carried by (some) of the MG clubs could cover us for any non-vehicle related incident

eg: gazebo blowing over & causing damage, member of public tripping over guy rope etc.

None of the above should be taken as absolute. We are continuing to make our investigations, we are awaiting some confirmations, and will report in full once the position is clear.

Final call for the Kilsby MG Annual Dinner: We have 46 attending but room for a few more.

Thursday February 19.  7.00 for 7.30 at The George

Cost will be £19.90 for two courses, £22.90 for three courses, both including tea/coffee & gratuity.

Please Note:

1) Payment by cash or Cheque payable to KILSBY MG CLUB. Not The George & Not Mike & Meryl.

2) Payment and Menu choices required tonight any new attenders: See Mike or Meryl.

Saturday 28 Feb: Gaydon Club Expo for club organisers. Mike Hill & myself will attend for Kilsby.

Sunday 1 March: MG/Triumph Spares Day at Stoneleigh.

Regarding the evening talk & the Silverstone visit I mailed about a while ago, we have had an encouraging response. To date, 22 people would attend the talk, and 18 would go to the Silverstone tour.

Thanks to all those who responded. These are provisional numbers depending on dates etc, and I will be mentioning these events on clubnight in case there are people who have not heard about them. With some idea of final numbers, we can then do further planning and set the dates.

2015 Events List

This was mailed to all members in January, and a slightly updated version is now posted on the website.

The website version will be kept updated as new events become known.

Other Items

Kim Perry has been unwell lately and unable to attend. Best wishes Kim, and look forward to seeing you soon.

MGCC Midland Centre AGM. Tony, Terry and myself attended this on January 19. The Centre is in good shape, with a few new committee members including Tony who is now formally on the committee after having organised the two Centre trials for some years. The usual Centre events of two trials, two sprints and the Welsh Rallye will take place again this year. Very encouragingly, all these events last year were well attended by competitors and helpers, and the 2015 Welsh Rallye is already fully booked.

There was an interesting discussion on MSA Social Run & Touring Assembly permits. These can be required to indemnify organisers such as ourselves for events such as our Drive-it-Day run. There may have been some changes regarding exemptions, and we are looking to see whether these affect us. What has been determined is that any event organisers must be members of an MSA affiliated club in order to obtain the protection of a permit.

While MGCC is an MSA affiliate, MGOC & MGOCC are not. We are considering the implications of this.

2015 Events List

I have a provisional list well underway, and hope to publish it later this month on the Website.

Just a few items to mention:

- A possible early spring visit to Silverstone for a ‘backroom’ guided tour & lunch.

- A possible evening talk.

- March 29: Visit to Mallory Park for an MGCC race event (First time back at Mallory for some years)

- June or July Clubnight: A BBQ at the George to celebrate our 21st year. (with advance tickets for the BBQ)

Other Items

Former member Claire Rees, who with Richard Barker moved to St Neots a few years ago, has been unwell, but is now happily recovered. The Midget has also had restorative treatment in the form of a respray.

Good to see David Knight’s article in the December issue of Safety Fast! about their successful 1300 mile trip to Skye last year. The car looked good in the pictures after David’s respray.
